The Verralls Surname |
The Verrall spelling is the most popular spelling out of the variants. I had originally assumed that Verralls was a variant on Verrall. This may prove to be the case but both family names have been traced back to before 1700 with Verrall in Sussex and Verralls in north Kent. So when did the variant start?
As far as we know there are very few Verralls's alive today. We are in contact with about 20 families.
Our earliest known forbear is Alexander Verralls, born in Bexley, Kent in 1852, married in Bromley, Kent. He is my great grandfather. The earliest record of Verralls is the marriage of Nicholas Verralls and Sarah Childmeade who married at Seal, Kent in 1718. The information on the descendants of Nicholas Verralls has been provided by Angela Verrells of Bromley. See the
The Research of Angela Verrells.Angela's information probably holds the clue to the forbears of Alexander and this is an area we are currently investigating.
The Alexander Verralls descendants have policeman in all four generations, right back to Alexander Verralls, our earliest record. Our father was born in St Johns Wood and served for a while in the police in Margate, where I was born. My brother is in the Hong Kong police, my uncle was in the Ceylon Police and my grandfather and my great grandfather in the Kent or London Police. (My personal relations with the police tend to be on motorway hard shoulders, on these occasions my surname has not counted for much). Interestingly, the Lewes branch of the Verrall family often served as Constables in the 1700 and 1800's.
The full lineage from Alexander, whom we suspect was illegitimate, is in Family Tree Maker. We are trying to think of ways in which we can display this information on a web site. Take a look at my ancestors
