Michael refers to "The Surnames of Sussex" published by Richard McKinley, Leopards Head Press, Oxford, 1988.

Michael wrote this in Nov 98: -
As far as I can ascertain the first reference to Verralls is around
1765. Where did they come from? I note in your family web site a
Huguenot origin is proposed. I have often seen this origin mentioned
for Verrall but nobody has presented any evidence. Do you have any
Huguenot references for Verralls?
This may be of interest:
It occasionally happened that an apprentice or a servant adopted, or was
known by the name of his master, usually with an additional S; thus
Henry, apprenticed to John Verrall may be known as Henry Verralls.
I don't know whether any 18th century apprenticeship records exist for
Kent but it could be worth a look.
There is also a discussion of the arbitrary addition of an S to surnames
in 'Surnames os Sussex', R McKinley, Leopards Head Press, Oxford, 1988.
