A Visit to Lewes

Notes of a Visit to Lewes Sussex 11th and 12th July 98

Roxana and Peter Verralls visited four churches and found evidence of the Verrall name in three of them. St Michael’s - High Street, St John the Baptist - Southover, St John - sub Castro. We could find no evidence at St Anne’s on the Hill.

St Michael’s Church

Lucy the wife of William Payne and only daughter of Henry Verrall late of Potton in the county of Bedford she died 12th December 1821 40th year of her life.

Henry died 8th February 1825 aged 73.

In the graveyard

Henry Chamber Verral (with one l) surgeon of this town for many years died 8th April 1842 aged 51.

To the Memory of John Verrall, late of this Parish Gent, Son Of John Verrall and Ann his wife who departed this life on the 29th February AD 1808 in the 83 year of his age.

John Verrall died December 17th 1784 at the age of 94

Ann died March 28th 1778 at the age of 85

Ann married Richard Arnold daughter of John and Ann Verrall died 12th November 1807 at 78 years of age

James Verrall son of John and Ann Verrall died March 29th 1762 at the age of 29

Maria Verrall daughter of John and Ann died April 28th 1775 at the age of 48

Elizabeth Giorgiana wife of William Verrall died December 1873 aged 75

William Verrall Lord of the Manor died 1890 January the 12th at his 82 years of his age.

Mary wife of Christopher Thorpe died November the 10th 1844 in the 80th year of age

Laura Verrall sister of William Verrall died August 13th 1882 aged 79 years

Henry Woolgar son of Henry and Ann Verrall died April 3rd aged 8 weeks

Vault 4 Face 1

Mrs Sarah relict of the befornamed Mr W Verrall died 24th day of February 1803 aged 80 years.

William Verrall died 21st day of April 1787 aged 65 years.

Widow Sarah Verrall died 21st January 1847 aed 85 years

Jane Turll sister of Sarah died 27th March 1848 aged 85

Richard Verrall youngest brother of William died 15th February 1833 aged 67

Laura youngest daughter of William and Sarah died 13th August 182 aged 79 years.

Brass Plaque in the Entrance

St John Sub Castro

In the Graveyard

Only found one headstone, John Verrall inscription not very legible.

We couldn’t go inside of the church because of the Sunday’s service.

St. Anne’s

We couldn’t found anything in this graveyard. Also we didn’t go inside because of the Sunday’s service.

"The Old Brewery House, truncated Tudor, clad in tile and knapped flint. The Verralls resided here from the 1680’s, brewing and malting until 1897".

Lewes, to the Sussex Archaeological Society.
